Big Nerd Ranch

The Big Nerd Ranch's primary focus was teaching. A content management system enabled creation of course descriptions and syllabi, instructor biographies, and a class schedule. A commerce solution allowed students to register and pay for classes. A business execution platform made daily operations as efficient as possible, freeing valuable time to market courses and seek new opportunities on the cutting edge of technology.

The initial eCommerce was handled via PayPal, and was sophisticated enough to allow for purchase orders and not simply credit card transactions. The web app did not keep student credit card information, but instead employed a single-use token approach to ensure the highest levels of security for students.

The public-facing website used a mix of Flash, CSS, and Javascript UI effects to seamlessly blend visually impactful content with complex details that explain to prospective students exactly what each course would teach (as well as recommend books and other resources prior to attending class). Press releases and instructor biographies were also an important part of this presentation layer: Big Nerd Ranch prided itself on employing only the best and brightest teachers to provide the best possible education.
